Evening bag, British, 1930–39

Shagreen, leather, and marcasite

Slipping the hand through its short strap, this smart handbag was held against or across the body and was the perfect accessory for the silk satin bias-cut evening dresses of the period, which encircled and accentuated the female form. Dyed shagreen, the outer skin of a ray or shark, in this particular shade of green was considered the height of chic during the 1930s.
