Handbag, British, c1890

Leather and metal

During the 1880s and 1890s women began to practice such sports as cycling, skating and tennis, resulting in a demand for small, hardwearing but attractive accessories. Hence the simple design of this handbag made of durable leather and carried by a sturdy chain. The plainness of the exterior is in contrast to the blood-red suede that lines the interior.
