Handbag, British, c1880

Leather and metal

During the 1880s a fashion for small boxy leather handbags developed. This type of bag was paired with the muted colours of bustled skirts, fitted bodices and angular hats of the period. Solidly made, this bag has a beige leather lining and would have been used to carry such essential items as keys, money purse and notebook.
